speakup not starting part 2

Followup to yesterday.

Seems that it is not just a problem starting speakup.

Boot message states that the current root file system is read only.  "enter 
root password or press control"D.

Also a suggestion that the partition is dammaged.

This is not sounding good.

Looks as if something has gone wrong with the install so looks like I will 
have to go through the process again.

Before I spend more time, has anyone tried the latest debian testing net 
install?
