debian testing no speakup at start

Have you checked /etc/modules to make sure your synth driver is being 
loaded? What if you start it manually with modprobe? You really should 
have a rescue CD around like grml or System Rescue CD for cases like 
this. They would give you speech and let you mount your system to make 
repairs.
