There are talking stats capable calculators, if speech is your
objective. The Orion model from www.aph.org or www.independentliving.com
for about $250 is based on a TI 34 or TI 36, depending upon which
documentation you read.
You can get a z-score table in braille and do that the old-fashioned way
if the calculator doesn't support z-scores.

Hey all,

Can anyone recommend console statistics software suitable
for an intro stats course?  The course calls for a ti-83 or ti-84
calculator which of course isn't accessible but I'm wondering if
learning something like octave or R would be too steep a learning curve
for someone without stats knowledge to begin with.  If not, which has
the better intro documentation to get a novice up to speed quickly? 
Any other options I should consider.  I do have a Windows terminal but
Matlab looks like another sledgehammer for what intro stats will be
doing.
