# dpkg-reconfigure desktop

...is the command you probably want.  The "desktop" package was
installed via the 'tasksel' program during the installation, and should
be what you're looking for.
run 'tasksel --list-tasks' for more info on packages that were installed
during installation, and don't run the "new installation" option if you
don't want your kernel removed. <winks>
