debian gnome installation status

Because libc6 in unstable distribution is broken I couldn't upgrade from 
stable to unstable.  I did get gnome installed on stable though with 
gnopernicus or I should say partly installed.  After all of gnome was 
downloaded and installed using aptitude and I rebooted the system gdm died 
because it says my display isn't set up properly.  For now I'm in unknown 
territory.
