Well, I don't know the exact amount each uses. Obviously, if you run
a screen reader in MS windows and run a bunch of pigs like Norton
system works and other self protection and monitoring programs, that
will use a bunch more memory than the guy who strips down his or her
windows box and runs virtually barefoot. I'm sure similar for
Xwindows and the Gnome desktop. I've never maxed out a machine with
either of these environments. I ran XP for over a year with only 512
meg but when I got around totrying out gnome, I was in the process of
increasing the memory on my machine to 1 gig but the stuff was on sale
for half price so I now have 2 gig. But let me assure you, you don't
need 2 gig to run either of these environments. So if you have 1 gb
in your box, you would be able to run Windows XP or Gnome with no
problems, I'm sure. Someone on list here already said he runs Gnome
with 512 so I guess 512 would be ample for both too. I just know from
years of experience that the more memory you have (up to a point), the
faster things go. I played with the Ubuntu live CD with 512 (before)
my memory upgrade and it was rather sluggish.; that's all I know.
