current kernel that Speakup supports

For installing a new kernel you can get kernels from
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/v2.6
As of right now the latest seems to be 2.4.24.
I haven't patched a recent kernel with the latest version of Speakup so
you'll want to follow the git instructions.
As far as compiling the kernel after the Speakup patch has been applied go:
make config or make menuconfig
make bzImage
Then copy System.map to /boot and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and create a
definition for your new image.
This file has good examples for doing this.

If I am running debian lenny (unstable) what kernel should I get?
And where would I get it from?
Also when installing speakup what instructions do I follow?
And do I need to do anything to grub?
Thanks,
