Problems with speakup's sysfs parameters

Hello all,

As of now, it is impossible to do the following to the speakup 
parameters in /sys/module/speakup/parameters.
1. Write to them in anything other than a root shell, sudo does not work 
in this regard (except for sudo su -.
2. cat/cp the files, even as root (this is what's causing speakupconf to 
fail, even when run as root).

Samual and William, any thoughts on this?
