Oops, I just violated that draconian license agreement then.
Oh no, I have to destroy all copies of the software now, before
I'm sued, darn it.

Seriously, sarcastic lame jokes aside, I don't recall seeing anything
saying that you're supposed to use update-rc.d, like you're supposed
to activate the other popular OS within 30 days. Update-rc.d makes the
job of maintaining runlevels much easier and cleaner, but there's no
problem doing that by hand, provided that you know what you're doing,
and understand that you get to keep all the pieces if you don't know what you're doing,
and break your system.
