verizon and debian

Earlier I thought I had done everything to set things up so I could send 
e-mail using my verizon account.  When I try sending a message on 
verizon.net though themessage fails to send and I get the error back 
message was not sent since no from sender was sent.  I used pine but this 
isn't unique to pine on debian.  e-mail should appear to be sent from 
dashielljt at verizon.net.
