Problems with speechd-up-0.4

Hi,
I am on a Debian unstable system.  I am running speechd-dispatcher-0.6.2. 
When attempting to configure my makefile it exits with the message that it 
is unable to find the speech library.  However a listing of /usr/lib 
shows:
ll libspeechd*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    19 2007-05-04 14:19 libspeechd.so.2 -> 
libspeechd.so.2.0.2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 20300 2007-05-01 05:25 libspeechd.so.2.0.2

What gives?
