Software synths

I'm running into a problem. I've upgraded computers and none of them have a
serial port to which I can attach my Dectalk express. I'm using Kubuntu edgy
and would like to know how to get the software synths working? At this point
I've used the "modprobe speakup_synth=spkout" and no luck. I'm trying to get
this running for class and Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
