speakup "remembers" old screen

I've also had a problem I think may be related. I have managed to get my
system into a state where the interactive responses are sinsible, but
any attempts to use the screen review on the numeric keypad doesn't
work. All the numeri review sees is "null" all over the screen.

reset doesn't help, reinserting the Speakup driver doesn't help. Only
reboot helps, and that's certainly an unhappy answer.
