Ubuntu and shutdown

I have only been using the ubuntu cd for one day.
When I want to shut off the computer, the only way I have found to  do it is
with the power button.
Is there a proper shut down command that can be initiated by a keyboard
shortcut?
Also I did alt-f1 to get an application list, but can't find any sort of
file browser.  Is there a way to run one?

I can tell you that for some reason ubuntu (I'm now using the feisty live 
cd0 doesn't get my sblive soundcard settings right. Seems like it does 
unmute everything necessary but there's one surround setting that has to 
have the volume turned up for it to work. I end up having to just let 
everything boot up normally, then I switch to a console and start brltty, 
then I go into alsamixer and fix that setting. After that I can start 
ubuntu.
