I highly recommend eSpeak. It's really responsive and sounds better
than any other free speech synthesizer that is currently available if
you can understand a British accent. <smile> Get it from
http://espeak.sourceforge.net
or if you run Debian Unstable or Ubuntu with Universe activated you can
apt-get install it. If you can apt-get install it, you don't have to
really do much to set it up other than configuring speech-dispatcher to
use it. For the most part, that's just a matter of uncommenting
espeak-generic in the list of modules in
/etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf and making it the default module.
