cross all ten of your toes and all ten of your fingers and try the command 
as root: apt-get remove --purge package-name If it fails and you've 
already installed aptitude then try: aptitude update aptitude dist-upgrade 
and allow aptitude to fix what it will.  Maybe this will get fixed.
