mplayer compilation haults

Hello list,
I'm trying to compile mplayer under debian, I move mty codecs to /usr/share/lib/codecs like it wants, run ./configure, and then make, and it runs my load averages up to 2, then it dies or kinda locks up at motion_est.c.
Any idea?
