speechd-up randomly dies on AMD64

I am running the i386 version of Ubuntu Edgy on my new AMD64 system, as
I am using the hard drive from my old dead 32-bit system. For some
strange reason, speechd-up seems to die at random for no apparent
reason. This seemed to happen on my 32-bit system as well, but it
happened much less frequently. It used to happen about once a day, but
it now can happen anywhere from 2 to 3 seconds to 2 or more hours after
starting it. There seems to be no pattern at all to this occurrence,
but sometimes speechd-up itself dies and sometimes it seems to crash
speech-dispatcher so that restarting speech-dispatcher is the only thing
that fixes it. I should also note here that although I am experiencing
this problem while running a 32-bit version of the OS, I have been told
that the same problem occurs when running a 64-bit Gentoo.

Has anyone found a workaround for this problem or is there a newer
version of speechd-up that fixes it?

Thanks for any help,
Lorenzo
