Michael,
Sendmail is not required to read email on linux. You would only need
sendmail if
you want to actually run a mail server. There are countless mail programs
that you
simply configure to use your service provider's mail server for incoming and
outgoing mail. And btw sendmail is something that even very experienced unix
admins struggle with. Don't mess with it if you don't need it!
