small problem with installing the 2.6.17 speakup debian kernel

Hi, I managed to get the yaird and initramfs-tools packages from 
www.backports.org and everything goes well until the installation of the 
grub boot loader the update-grub script can't be found.  Where can I get 
this script or program and so I can upgrade to 2.6.17?  I uninstalled the 
2.6.17 kernel after I got the error so everything from it is no longer on my 
system.
