making zsh beep like bash

Looks to me like you are running zsh from bash as though it were an 
executable program. If you have installed zsh with a packaging system 
such as yum or apt-get, you should use the usermod command as root to 
change your user's shell to /bin/zsh, like so:

# usermod -s /bin/zsh username

Then log out of username and log back in again. Before you get to a 
prompt, you will have a configuration script with menu selections to 
configure your initial setup. That would be a good start.
