mplayer and compressed swf files

Has anyone managed to figure out how to play macromedia flash files
that are compressed swf with mplayer?  I have googled around but come
up empty handed.  Everywhere I've found anything at all about the swf
format it says it is supposed to play them just fine yet I get errors
from the libavformat library on the files I've tried.
