According to Janina Sajka:
# I'm not sanguine about getting mainstream to incorporate accessibility
# Heck, our own little Linux community screamed bloody murder when GDM
# incorporated a beep so that those of us beginning to use the GUI desktop
# might now when the GUI login was up and. One lousy beep, and that's too
# much to ask.

the problem I noticed with the beep is that it seems it can't be easily
turned on or off, or maybe I'm wrong about that. I only delt with GDM
for a short time when I was running Fedora on one of my laptops, and the
beep was on by default with no easy way for me to turn it off. I am
proposing a system where the "accessibility features" are turned off by
default, but they are very easy to turn on, eitherwith the single press
of a command key or by speaking a voice command similar to the
"announce" command on some of the LG phones.

# nd here you think Sharp, Sanyo and Sony are going to run
# to add support for eyes-free operation on their hand helds?

I think they could actually benefit by doing so. For one thing, it
translates into at least a few thousand more sales. For another, it
brings some much needed tough competition to the assistive technology
market.

# What are you smoking?

Hopefully the money-hungry companies who are currently pricing their
products much higher than most of their customers can afford to pay.
