mplayer problems under debian

I've been using mplayer from original sources for some time now; forget
what version I'm running just now but wonder if there's any real changes
or improvements to it since the past six months or so? I like the seek
navigation much better than zinf but I think zinf has a much better
display.  I like the way zinf shows the file tag information where
mplayer is pretty poor since it has all that other stuff I'd just soon
not see on a regular basis.
