My advice is go for unstable. It's not that unstable and turnaround for 
fixes is very very fast.

My other advice is that when something gets put on hold, you can often 
resolve it by doing a dist-upgrade rather than a simple upgrade with 
apt-get.

dist-upgrade is not a distribution upgrade, although the name sounds 
like it might be. It is a more aggressive variation of simple upgrade 
that does more of the necessary stuff for complicated upgrade issues.

I have been using unstable for six months or more with no major problems 
here. Minor ones got fixed in a matter of days.
