booting problem

Yes, you could do that, and it would probably work. However, the
problem with this solution is that every time you want to boot either
gnu/linux or windows, you will need to make the required changes in
cmos, which could get tedious to say the least.

A much more elegant solution used by most of us on this list who
dual-boot is to install a boot loader such as lilo or grub to the
master boot record of the first hard drive, thus allowing one to boot
either windows or gnu/linux without having to mess with cmos. Hth.
