hardware not noticed?

Hello list,
I'm trying to figure out what's going on.
I did ifconfig, and I only see the loopback device. I don't see eth0 in there
Any idea what I could do?
I have to have a sighted user do this for me, because until I get the internet up and running again, I can't do much.
Anyway, any reason why eth0 wouldn't be detected?
