Jude,

It will not work to simply upgrade that particular kernel. Instead, you 
should install the 2.6.12 speakup kernel available from the same 
archive. The exact name you want is probably 
linux-image-2.6.12-1-speakup-k7

Install that package, adjust your lilo or grub boot loader, and reboot. 
When the new kernel is up and running, you can then do an apt-get 
- --purge remove on the 2.6.8 kernel.
