Ok to stop the speech on your normal laptop keyboard 
hold down the caps lock key and press the normal entor key
this is the same as pressing the enter key on the numbpad
but if your using a laptop you most likely don't have a numbpad
so it is best to use capslock+normal enter key to stop speech
after doing this you can use any key like your CTRL key or what ever
to make speakup start speaking again
