help with speakup kernel and software speech

Okay here is what I have done.

1.  I did "rpm -ih kernel-2.6.13."
2.  I then made the initrd.
3.  I tried doing the chkconfig 2344.  But that was unsuccessful 
however I am booting in to text mode.

I am not sure what else you need.  I apologize for being so forgetful I 
am not on the Linux box right now.
