midnight commander file review mode no longer works

Hi there,
I'm using midnight commander 4.61 with speakup from cvs and kernel 
2.6.17.8.
Until recently I could read a file by using mc's file viewer and press 
insert-r to have it read the document.  Now, speakup simply reads the top 
line,  which is the status line.  It does this continuously until ctrl is 
pressed to stop the down-arrow generation.  I have tried creating a window 
and silencing reading of the top line, in which case speakup simply won't 
read the document.  In fact, it's silent.  I've used all cursor modes to 
no avail.  Has any one else had this problem?
