If you find the iid application inaccessible, you can download Latex
in source code from:
http://www.latex-project.org/ftp.html
Yes, these days it is used largely by maths and science students who
need help with formating formulae, but it's actually a fully-fledged
text formatting language. It pre-dates Word and has rather more
features, and is free beer. In these days of wysiwyg editors of
course, it's a bit of a dying art.
