The problem with the existing voip solutions are that they can't work behind firewalls (speak freely), are too laggy (speexenc/dec over ssh - and even on localhost), take to much bandwidth (arecord piped to aplay), or are graphical (most iax/sip phones). I don't know how to configure asterisk as just a client or just a server, and it looks daunting.
