mplayer and starting services

First mplayer:
I am wanting to play the asx windows media file, and mplayer under fc3 says:
can't find avisynth.dll in /usr/lib/win32.  It also mentions something
concerning lirc support not found and some concerning remote control
second:
does anyone know where services such as httpd e.g. apache are started? As
root if I type httpd and hit enter the web server responds, but until this
is typed, nothing responds on port 80.
info on machine:
fc3 fresh install of heidelberg, 2.6.11, all updates have been applied
