To turn off the typing echo

echo 0 >/proc/speakup/key_echo

Saving and restoring settings is a bit more complicated, but basically
you need to copy /proc/speakup to somewhere like /etc/speakup and copy
it back upon reboot. There are a number if different scripts to do this
floating around, but in the cvs version of speakup is a speakupconf
script which comes in handy.
