Printing images from console

Can you print other stuff from the console with something like CUPS?  If 
so, it should be set up to print images as well, depending on what filters 
are installed.  I know that I can print PDF files, for example with CUPS. 
The best thing to do is try printing the image with a normal "lpr" command 
and have somebody let you know if it comes out right.  at worst, it won't 
work.
