network speed question

I do not profess to be an expert, but there are a lot of parameters that
effect the transfer speed of tcp/ip and also of ethernet. For example,
look at things like MTU, and large window support. I'd be interested to
know if making the settings mimic as closely as possible would make the
transfer speeds similar.
