How about vim?

vim .

will launch vim in a file edit kind of way. From within vim you can do:

:e .

If you then do 'i' for 'info,' you will get an ls -l type listing that
you can navigate to and sort on. So, you can use 'W' to navigate to date
or byte size data and then 's' to sort the entries.

All kinds of other neat vim stuff available.
