The insert+period keystroke may prove useful in such cases.  It identifies 
the color of the text under the Speakup cursor.  Basically, whichever 
option is in a different color is probably the one that is selected.  Most 
often, it will be something like "bright red on white," or it will be the 
inverse of the rest of the screen.  The screen will be white on black, 
except the selected option which is black on white.  Hope this helps.
