debian install menus

Hello,
I installing debian from the install iso.  How do you follow the menus with
speakup?

For instance, in the partitioning menu, how do you know whether you are on
yes, no or goback?  I thought I had saved my partition table changes, but
they didn't take.  When I go into the "install base system" it brings me
into the partition menu.  

Anyway, does the tab key do anything or do I use the up/down keys?  Maybe I
need to turn follow-corsus off.  

Menus sure weren't designed with us in mind <grin>.
