periodic snapshots of Speakup CVS?

Yes, I did that a year or two ago when we had some big problems with
Accent Synth.  I forget the exact syntax but I modified the checkout
script to include a date parm and just specified a date in the area
where I knew Speakup to be stable.

Yes, I also wish a periodic tarball could be built or something so if
one needed to, he/she could keep it around and do just an install like
from a production tarball.  I actually tried that trick myself once by
creating my own tar ball from a checkout but the files wouldn't
install correctly.  I think when it is released as a prod tar ball,
the patch is changed some how; I don't remember the exact errors I got
but I gave up on the idea for then.
