I am using kernel 2.6.7 and "Speakup v-2.00 CVS: Thu Oct 21 10:38:21 EDT." 
I am going to try booting from the Slackware boot disk and see if the same 
problem crops up.  It uses kernel 2.4.26, and an earlier CVS build, which 
I can't recall.
