Ned -- have you considered a cheaper synth like doubletalk or tripletalk?
I have no idea how much they are, but dectalks are kind of pricy in
comparison, but I have a notetaker with doubletalk speech, and while it
isn't pleasant it is very understandable.

It seems like if you are taking a class on linux administration, you really
need to be able to hear the boot process.
