I tried the "*" and "/" commands on both the numeric row, and the numeric keypad, to no avail.  Nor did "mute" work.  I just got a lot of gabbling from my 
synthesizer.

Actually, I just tested it and it does have mute also.  The key for mute 
is "m".  You can press "m" once to mute the sound and press it again to 
unmute it.  So, you can do both, use the volume control or use mplayer's 
interface.
