speakup.s

i am installing slackware 10.1 kernel 2.4.29
i am using an old speakup.i
because the newer slackware speakup.s
won't work for some reason.
if someone could just tell me how to build a current
speakup.i that might help.
i am able to compile kernels with no problem.
