debian speakup floppies

Whenever I finish with putting an image on floppy with dd and bs=512K and 
then try to verify that same floppy I'm told /dev/fd0 doesn't exist. 
It's like it went away.  Haaven't managed to get a good verify yet either. 
The sync command doesn't help this problem either.  In all cases when 
doing this kind of operation I have and do listen for and wait for the 
write or verify process to come to a stop.
