But if there no drivers, or it is not written into the VoiceOver program, or 
the OS, then I guess the point of the interface is mute.  I am still 
uncomfortable with relying on software speech alone.

The only external synth options would have to be via USB. Since the
NewWorld macs started shipping in 1999, the serial ports were dropped
entirely, in favour of FireWire and USB.
