What I do in situations like this is use a second mail account out on
one of these services like haotmail or yahoo or something.  It so
happens I have a yahoo mail account I use for junk and spam and I just
use that for my mail config testing.  Another way to do a sneaky test
using a public list is to respond to somebody's e-mail with a quick
comment that isn't really important.  That way, if the test gets
through, so good and you will see the results. if test fails, well the
reply wasn't super important anyhow.  Just a couple ways to test without
sending test messages to the list.
