when you do an apt-get dist-upgrade don't touch it. i no what it said to reboot but still don't touch it. i had no problems like this

slow down,

What distro are you using? if it is fedora, you don't need to download
knopix, you can use the first disk of your install set, and tell it to start
up in a repair mode
