speakers and shutdown that used to work and now don't work as well

Ok, well if the system is that old it's very unlikely to have acpi, so you 
may want to have a look at your kernel config and re-compile with the 
correct apm options enabled - you need to be aware that stock kernels don't 
seem to enable apm and acpi, I think this is because they can make some 
systems crash that don't have them.
